Thirteen Colonies Motivation

Thirteen Colonies Motivation

Written by Dave Gannaway

As explorers and adventurers alike discovered the great bounties of the ‘new world’ they quickly began to form what is now known as the colonies in the land that was to become one of the most powerful nations in the world.

England laid claim to a lion’s share of the territory that created the Thirteen Colonies motivation . . . the motivation of course was to keep hold and defend these new territories.

From its beginning in the seventeenth century, settlers from many European countries came and made their home in this new land of opportunity. Settlers from England, Spain, France, Sweden and Holland each made their claim and formed their individual colonies. In those early days the colonization was largely along the eastern coast.

The thirteen colonies motivation generally refers to those established by the English. They were in three distinct areas.

• The New England Colonies - Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.

• Central Colonies - New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

• Southern Colonies - Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

The Thirteen Colonies motivation was clearly defined by the diverse activities of each of the areas.

Those who settled in the northern New England Colonies such as the Pilgrims and Quakers did so that they could practice the religions of their choice. Focused on family life they wanted to live quietly in peace and grow their own food.

The Central Colonies although still practicing the religions of their choice were also focused on business where they established a wide variety on industries such as ironworks and shipyards.

Southern Colonies settlers also had an eye to make money. This area was most suitable for agriculture, where large plantations grew producing tobacco, peanuts and many other things.

England’s Thirteen Colonies motivation was strong, so too was the desires of France and Spain to take it from them. This led to many altercations and to much unrest. England had a long-running history of going to war with France and Spain that continued in the new world and Canada.
