What is Internal External Motivation
Written by Dave Gannaway
What is internal external motivation? It is three fold.
• Internal motivation
• External motivation
• Internal/external motivation
Internal motivation is when you, the individual is excited about doing something for yourself . . . psychologist call this intrinsic motivation.
External or extrinsic motivation is stimulate by outside objectives . . . doing good work for your employer or to please another.
Internal external motivation is probably the most accurate of the three because all motivation is self-motivation (internal). So the answer to the question, ‘what is internal external motivation’ is to self motivate yourself to help an outside cause. To get motivated to produce good end of month figures for your employer.
This is where the true understanding of motivation should lie . . . in creating stimulation to work on tasks for others. Uninformed employers sometimes think that just for the asking or the addition of extra money, employees are automatically motivated. But in truth unless internally stimulated by or with something that appeals to them individually the employer’s words or money, will fall on stony ground.
Psychologists have created many definitions for intrinsic and also for extrinsic motivation. They have them well and truly calibrated and separated yet nowhere have I seen their natural combination. I believe to address the question ‘what is internal/external motivation?’ would produce a far more definite answer and a greater understanding of motivation in general.
